The Huffington Post devoted a special edition of the HUFFPOST HILL newsletter. late this evening, on the game of musical chairs being played out in the Democratic caucus between Steny Hoyer and James Clyburn, describing the game as a contest between "the dwindling white southern bloc against African-American Democrats for a seat at the leadership table."
Mr. Hoyer and Mr. Clyburn are going for the title "Party whip,' which, since the Democrats lost the Speaker's chair, is now the number two position in the Democratic caucus. My take on this dance is: Why have the dance? And: What is it all about, Democrats?
If the Democrats are about working for the best interest for America, then the solution is unity, and the question begging for an answer is: Why break up the team? The team is Nancy Pelosi-Steny Hoyer-James Clyburn, and the ranking is one-two-three. Titles are titles that should be adjusted, as the Democrats need to be flexible and able to adjust quickly. If the party is going to be successful in doing what it needs to do, which is to win back control of the House in 2012, and to hold on to the Senate and to the White House, ways must be found to achieve the purpose.
As for titles? If the need arises, invent new titles. Leader, First Assistant Leader (Whip), Second Assistant Leader (call it what you want, everyone would know what it is). Structure should serve the purpose, not be so rigid that it causes a collapse. One should never let structure get in the way of what needs to be done.
The team is Pelosi-Hoyer-Clyburn, the ranking is one-two-three, this should continue.
