The Quitting Senator, Evan "Baby" Bayh, continues his too long goodbye. In an opinion column, in yesterday's New York Times, called, "Why I’m Leaving the Senate," baby Bayh begins with how humorists from Ben Franklin to David Letterman have made fun of Congress. Well, with senators like Baby Bayh, the jokes write themselves. He even makes reference to the the old Milton Berle joke: “You can lead a man to Congress, but you can’t make him think.” Well, Baby Bayh?
What is his point? That Congress had long ago become a joke? That he doesn't wants to play any part, any longer, in the joke? Okay.
But then the Baby Senator begins to weep about how nicer the Senate was during his father's time, (Birch Bayh, a grownup, a progressive, served in the Senate from 1963 to 1981), and about how nasty and mean it is now, with back stabbers -- Oh, my! -- who are "actively plotting your (his) demise" -- hopefully, he is referring to political demise! So what does Baby Bayh do? So afraid that the repubs are plotting his political demise, he brings about his own political demise. Very smart thinking, Baby Bayh!
Then he makes cute -- wrote, to help people get over their meanest, or not to be so mean, all one hundred Senators should do lunch! Once a month! There should be some non-political interaction between Senators. Is he suggesting volleyball?
Baby Bayh will be a senator until January. I think he is not ready to quit saying, "goodbye." He probably is enjoying saying "goodbye" more than he enjoyed being a senator. Oh, goodbye, Baby Bayh.
