President ObamaPresident ObamaTodays Washington Post reports that Mr. President Obama is ready to cave and junk trial by a civilian court and jury for military tribunals, for the 911 defendants. Some folks are saying so what?  Aren't we are talking about giving justice to confessed terrorists? Read more

Cheers to Copenhagen

Cheers!Cheers!Yesterday I talked about Obama needing to put on the S suit on the plane on the way over to Copenhagen- he did. While it’s nowhere near what everyone had been hoping for when Copenhagen started to gather steam earlier this year, it is in fact more than everyone had been expecting as the summit grew closer. With deadlocks around emissions cut commitments and monetary contributions from industrialized nations, Obama was walking into a snakepit. But he did it anyway. "This progress did not come easily and we know this progress alone is not enough ... We've come a long way but we have much further to go," said Obama. Read more

Making it happenMaking it happenU.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met at the end of this week but did not come to an agreement on reducing Cold War era nuclear arms stocks. They did, however, say that they would continue to work to do so until the new year. Read more

Questions About Afghanistan

Obama takes his time deciding what America will do...Obama takes his time deciding what America will do...There are 65,000 U.S. troops currently in Afghanistan and President Obama is taking his time considering whether to send all or part of the 40,000 recommended/ requested by General Stanley McChrystal. Cheney says Obama is dithering (Does what Cheney thinks still matter?) It’s the first real decision that Obama is going to make in his role as Commander In Chief.

It brings up a few questions, all of political significance: Read more

Remember this iconic poster? Just one year ago they were plastered on walls across America- and though many of us recognize these posters, few of us would know the background story on one of the most recognizable visuals of the early 21st century. Read more

Healthcare Bill Cost Cut 15%

Now We Need to VoteNow We Need to VoteAre we still talking about the Healthcare bill? Yes, we emphatically are. And now we are talking cost, because that is where the decisions are made in the end, whether things go forward or die in committees before they can make it to the floor for votes.

What was just months ago blasted as certain to cost over $1 Trillion is now being billed at an estimated $829 Billion and would cut the federal deficit by $81 Billion over 10 years. Well, let’s do it then! That’s some pretty fantastic news on the cost front- an over 15% reduction? I’m starting to think that Obama played the politics out right on this one- let everybody complain and protest during the break and come back with rebuttals and a cheaper plan- nice. Read more

T. Boone Pickens Teams With... the Democrats?

T. Boone PickensT. Boone PickensHave you heard of T. Boone Pickens? The man who made billions in oil in Texas? Friend and supporter of George W. Bush? The man who funded the infamous Swift Boat TV commercials that played their role in bringing down John Kerry’s bid for the presidency in 2004? The man who is heavily invested in nuclear gas and… wind power? If you haven’t heard of him yet, you may just hear of him a lot in the future- and you may have heard of some of his friends.

“He’s a legendary entrepreneur,” President Obama said. “One of the things that I think we have to unify the country around is having an intelligent energy policy.” Read more

Guantanamo Bay Will Close Later Than Expected

Guantanamo BayGuantanamo BayObama made a lot of campaign promises, from getting troops out of Iraq to working for healthcare reform to bring affordable health care to all people. Another that he made was to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, commonly known as Gitmo. The U.S. naval base detention center was established by the Bush administration in 2002. Used as the holding-place for terrorism suspects, initially for suspects arrested after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, Gitmo has been controversial for years owing to allegations of torture and prisoner mistreatment by U.S. authorities. A Letter to Kenya

U.S. Protest Over Kenyan ViolenceU.S. Protest Over Kenyan ViolenceInternational diplomacy takes on many strange forms- not only are you requesting things from people with a different language, background, culture and set of priorities, but you are asking for things based on your own goals, not theirs, even if you do have their best interests in mind. Add onto that the fact that everyone has different ways of asking for things, and of granting or denying those requests and all of the sudden you’ve got a challenge bigger than you could ever have imagined- and that’s international diplomacy: to start. What About Cutting Money Emissions?

Follow the MoneyFollow the MoneyWhatever the G20 decides on is what’s going to happen with the UN- this is my prediction for not only the remainder of the year and the Copenhagen summit, but for the future of climate change negotiations in general. The G20 are the big guys, the ones with the influence and, most importantly, the ones with the money- this is the meeting where all the industrialized countries will figure out what to say to the developing nations and what they are willing to offer in the way of emissions allowances and financial aid for climate change- caused issues.

Follow the money and you get your answers. And this time around, it looks like the money isn’t going to try anything too novel- a little more pushing it back to the next generation if you ask me. Read more
